Galleria Mall murder suspect indicted in what is now being labeled a hate crime
A convicted rapist was indicted on second-degree murder charges Tuesday in the killing of a woman at a White Plains mall.
Westchester District Attorney Jeanine Pirro says the murder is now being labeled a hate crime. Convicted rapist Phillip Grant told police he was at war with white people and that?s why he killed an innocent woman last month. Grant?s victim was 56-year-old Connie Russo Carriero, a legal secretary on her way to her car after work. According to Pirro, Grant told police in his confession he murdered Carriero because she had blond hair and blue eyes. She adds that Grant also said he would have killed more white people if he had a gun.
The label of the murder as a hate crime raises the minimum sentence to 20 years.
