Garbage pickup got underway in Mount Vernon Saturday following the suspension of garbage pickups due to a shortage of operable trucks.

The city was loaned trucks from New York City, Yonkers and the New York State Department of Public Works.

More than a dozen trucks were out on the streets picking up piles of garbage, which residents said needed to be removed because it was attracting rodent infestations.

Officials said without sanitation, city comes to halt and also added that piles of garbage bring out rodents.

Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard has been in a longstanding dispute with City Comptroller Deborah Reynolds regarding the safety of garbage trucks and other official city vehicles, which prompted the suspension of garbage pickup for the month of July.

The mayor said the issue is due to about $500,000 in unpaid bills, which she added is the comptroller's responsibility. Reynolds, who was under fire recently for a similar issue regarding Mount Vernon fire trucks, said the mayor doesn't know how to do her job.

Officials said that they hope that the issue brings to light the urgency for Mount Vernon to invest more on sanitation equipment.

State garbage trucks will be deployed for up to two weeks throughout the city.

Residents on the south side of the city had their garbage picked up on Saturday. North side residents will be receiving their pickup on Tuesday.
