? Traffic started moving again on the New York State Thruway in time for the evening commute after a garbage truck flipped over Friday morning in Hillburn.
The southbound side of the Thruway was shut down for hours as crews cleaned up the accident. Rescuers say the driver of the truck hit an overpass. They believe the dumpster part of the truck was raised a bit. According to investigators, after hitting the overpass, the truck spun out of control.
"Flipped the truck over several times ? we lost a lot [of] oil and hydraulic fluid," says Lt. Craig Flanagan, of the Hillburn Fire Department.
Hazmat crews rushed to the scene to clean up the oil spill before it reached any of the surrounding waterways, while Thruway engineers inspected the hit overpass for stability. The 44-year-old driver had to be cut out of the cab of the truck. He is being treated at Good Samaritan Hospital for non-life threatening head and neck injuries.
?It is pretty miraculous, and we're very lucky that the driver is the only person injured today,? says Sgt. John Antonelli, of the New York State Police.
