Garnerville residents cope without electricity, running water
Garnerville residents are still without fresh drinking water several days after their town was hit by Tropical Storm Irene. The town, comprised mostly of low-income seniors and children, is in need of electricity and water, which is being donated by a local Shoprite store. "We have to live like we are in some poor country," one resident said. A transformer explosion cut off the town's power and well-pump that provides water pressure. Residents have compensated by carrying buckets and jugs to fill-up points, and one woman says she is running 14 extension cords from a neighbor's house to power her lights and TV. A spokesman for Orange and Rockland Utilities says he hopes all outages will be fixed by Friday at midnight.
