Police say a typical day at Goshen High School turned into a frightening medical emergency for a 16-year-old boy Monday after he ate one or more THC-laced edibles.
The Goshen High School student was taken to the hospital by ambulance after he reported feeling light-headed, dizzy and tired.
Police discovered during their investigation that a teenage girl allegedly gave it to him, and she was arrested.
“What’s happening is the kids don’t understand what the recommended serving size or dosage is and they’re using it and having problems,” said Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler.
Hoovler says the county has seen several cases of kids taking marijuana products meant for adults and getting sick.
In this case, the bag of “Honey King Blueberry Puff’s” that the student allegedly ate from says the THC-laced edible is for adults 21 years and older and has a warning on the back to use “extreme caution.”
“Unfortunately, people are walking into convenient stores and finding it there," said Goshen School Superintendent Dr. Kurtis Kotes. "They’re able to go online and order it more easily than they order a book to read.”
Kotes says the district is working hard to prevent substance abuse among kids in school and has counseling in place for teens who need help.
In this case, police say the teenage boy is OK. Kotes says disciplinary action will be taken against both students involved.
"There are still rules in place and while the laws have changed for adults, they have not for students," said Kotes.
Authorities are asking parents to continue to talk to their students about substance abuse. In this case, they say don’t know how the teenage girl got ahold of the product - but she’s now facing a family court charge of endangering the welfare of a child.
