Governor George Pataki (R-NY) announced Wednesday that he is stepping down at the end of his term in 18 months.
Pataki took office in 1995 after defeating Democrat Mario Cuomo. During his speech, Pataki spoke of the September 11th terror attacks, as well as increasing jobs, cutting taxes and preserving the environment. In the announcement, Pataki said he would begin to follow a new path with new challenges in 2007.
Many speculate Pataki will seek the GOP nod for president in 2008. Pataki is known as a fairly liberal Republican, supporting both gay and abortion rights. Former state GOP Party Chair Anthony Colavita Sr. says Pataki?s liberalness could pose a problem in a presidential race.
