An alleged 'gang assault' injured an 11-year-old girl in Monticello last week. 

Dolores Vargas, of Monticello, gave News 12 photos of her granddaughter – who has autism – after she says the girl was assaulted outside the Robert J. Kaiser Middle School.

Vargas says her granddaughter has a concussion, whiplash and torn ligaments in her leg after she was attacked by three other students.

She says instead of being protected, the child was given in-school suspension with her attackers for trying to defend herself.

"The administrators, you call them, you tell them their concerns but it's a slap on the wrist. It's watered down and yet as parents, taxpayers we are sending our children to school and they're coming back assaulted," she says.

Vargas says her granddaughter has not been able to return to school.

News 12 reached out to the district for comment but has not yet heard back.
