Greenwood Lake to put the brakes on boating speeds
A recent drunk driving arrest is highlighting the need for safer boating along Greenwood Lake as leaders consider a new law to reduce speed on the water.
The village is looking to put the brakes on speeds when the sun sets. Officials are proposing to reduce the boating speed limit from 15 mph, to a slower, no-wake speed limit. Officials say boating accidents in recent years have occurred during the evening hours.
However, some believe slowing things down will force adventurous nighttime boaters to take their business elsewhere. One resident says the law will come with tremendous opposition from people that have significant amounts of money invested in boats with huge engines who like to drive fast.
Saturday morning two people were injured after a Monroe man ran a boat into a stopped patio boat. Police say he was speeding and he was charged with boating while intoxicated.
Greenwood Lake Mayor Barbara Moore says the proposed lowering of the nighttime speed limit has been in the works for some time and is not in response to the latest boating accident at the lake.
