Haverstraw teen goes into alcohol-induced coma for eight hours
A 14-year-old girl from Haverstraw went into an alcohol-induced coma for eight and a half hours this week. The incident occurred after a booze bash involving several high school students.
Police say four teenagers were discovered drinking a bottle of Bacardi at the playground behind North Garnerville Elementary School. One of the girls fainted and was taken to Nyack Hospital, where she fell into a coma. She has since recovered.
The deputy superintendent of the North Rockland School District says alcohol education is again at the forefront for teens. School resource officers are on hand helping students understand the serious consequences of drinking. However, police say programs can only do so much and it is up to parents to keep alcohol locked up and away from kids.
