Temperatures in the Hudson Valley that reached into the 90s today may seem downright comfortable pretty soon as the heat wave promises to get even more intense.
Residents have been buying up fans and air conditioning units, causing one Best Buy in Hartsdale to go through nearly half of its allotted stock.
Utilities are also prepared for the expected surge in energy use from the appliances, saying they are deploying extra crews to quickly handle any problems that may arise.
Hospital officials say that they've seen a spike in patients coming in with heat-related illnesses.
Doctors advise residents venturing out during the heat wave to stay well-hydrated, especially workers because doing strenuous work outside can put you at risk for heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
Numerous cooling centers have been opened all over the area to allow those without access to air conditioning to come inside and cool off.
