Most Holy Trinity Church in Mamaroneck celebrated its 135th anniversary on Sunday by holding its second Mass in six years.

The celebration was held after the historic church almost closed for good.

News 12 was present for the church's grand reopening back in May and parishioners said the anniversary felt extra special.

"Oh, there's no way to describe it, other than saying the most monuments thing in our lives," said parishioner Dolores Agins, who has attended the church for 30 years.

The Roman Catholic Church has a more-than-century-long history in Mamaroneck.

In 2018, the Archdiocese of New York ordered the church to be closed due to lack of money and enrollment.

"I didn't even anticipate that it could possibly be successful to reopen this church," Agins added.

But parishioners formally appealed to the Vatican and won. Mamaroneck resident James Maver was one of those who led the effort.

"Somebody had to do something when it closed, somebody had to step up and fight," Maver said.

Coming together at the church again reminded everyone church is much less a building, but a community.

"Grew up coming here my whole life with my grandmother," Maver said.

"I mean, this is a family," Agins said.

The church will only open for special occasions like this Sunday, but parishioners hope the church will once again hold weekly Mass services.
