A house was completely destroyed by a fire that broke out in Stamford on Friday morning, officials say.

The fire broke out on Butternut Lane around 6 a.m.

Neighbors in the quiet Stamford neighborhood say they were woken up by lights and sirens this morning. When Neil Goldberg looked outside, he saw his neighbor's home a few houses down fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters say the single-family home had completely been taken over by flames that stretched to the second floor by the time they arrived on scene.

Crews battled the fire as neighbors looked on.

Fire officials say the owner of the house wasn't home at the time, and they believe he has been in the hospital for something unrelated to the fire.

Fire crews say the effort to put the fire out was immense and that crews called a tanker shuttle to keep rotating a constant flow of water to fight the flames.

Chief Tom Gloersen says the home was completely destroyed.

"Most concerning for us, we had propane tanks on the side of the house. If they were to go, it would have been a different outcome," he says.

Goldberg says the homeowner is well-known on the block and always keeps everyone informed of what's going on.

"We're just here as neighbors. I hope it's a situation where he reaches out to us, and we will do whatever we can to help the family," Goldberg says.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Firefighters responded to a single family home on Butternut Lane for a fully involved fire.

Officials blocked off roads surrounding the area and tell News 12 the home is in danger of collapsing due to the damage from the fire.
