Riders throughout the Hudson Valley have mixed reactions to the MTA's proposed budget unveiled last week.

The proposal will affect fares on Metro-North and NJ Transit trains. Riders will see different increases depending on where they are traveling to. Riders taking the train into New York City can expect fares to rise as much as 33 percent, while those taking the train into New Jersey can expect an increase as much as 75 percent.

One resident said now that gas prices are down, it might be cheaper to drive. Another resident feels differently adding that public transportation is better than sitting in traffic.

"I?m happy to pay it," said Jim Yulerman, of Pearl River. "I certainly don't want to get into the car and get stuck in traffic on the way to town. It's a zoo. I'd much rather ride the train."

The MTA has scheduled hearings in January and February where riders will have an opportunity to voice their concerns about the fare hikes. The proposed increases will be implemented in June or July.
