Students across the Hudson Valley headed back to school Tuesday, and some found ways to keep cool without air conditioning during the hot day.
Kids in Mount Pleasant sat down in physical education class instead of moving around on Tuesday.
“We have a full schedule, but we did make a couple changes because of the heat,” says physical education teacher Sean Mayer.
Mayer says Columbus Elementary students had the chance to walk around while getting to know their new classmates on the first day of school.
The library was one of the only air conditioned rooms in the school, and as a result, staff had to follow specific procedures to keep their students comfortable.
Mayer said the students were encouraged to bring a water bottle with them. He said in each wing of the school they have water fillers where students can refill their water.
Instead of going outside for recess, students also stayed inside the classrooms, surrounded by plenty of activities and fans.
Student Daniela Marrico said she didn’t mind Tuesday's heat, which News 12 meteorologists predict will break later this week. She dressed in lighter clothing and came to school prepared with a big water bottle.
