TARRYTOWN - About 200 people gathered in Tarrytown today for the ninth annual 'Hunger Heroes' breakfast sponsored by Food Bank for Westchester.

Awards were given to those who recognize that there are people battling hunger even in the most affluent communities in the country. "The work that we do could never get done unless there were people out there who were willing to give up their time and their muscles and their effort," says the Food Bank's Ellen Lynch.

Among those honored for their work was Maria Regina High School. For 25 years, students and staff have helped hundreds of families with their annual Thanksgiving food drive. Students say participating is something that stays with them for life. "I think every person who graduates from Maria Regina gets that sense of community service and wanting to do good for others," says Alicia Figura.

Baldwin Mitchell was honored for his volunteer work at the Yonkers Seventh Day Adventist Church food pantry. He's been helping people there for the past 13 years. "It's a happy feeling that the work that the Lord has led me to do with humbleness of heart."

Other honorees included the Boys and Girls Club of Northern Westchester, Shiloh Baptist Church in New Rochelle, Stop & Shop and Capital One Bank.
