HV family, accused of keeping sex slave, appears in court
A Rockland judge asked that a New City family rethink their decision to be represented by one attorney in a sex-slave case brought against them by a woman who says she suffered years of abuse at the hands of the family. The Jakota family appeared in court today, maintaining their claims that they are completely innocent of the charges against them.
A now 22-year-old woman says that she was brought from India in January of 2008 for an arranged marriage with one of the Jagotas. The couple had a daughter, but for a three-year period, the woman says that she was treated as a sex slave and a servant in the family's New City home.
A judge today recommended the family rethink their decision to have one attorney for every family member, saying that as more facts come out through their testimonies, they could find themselves on "different paths" when it comes to their defense.
