IBM cutting about 5,000 jobs in U.S.
Armonk-based technology giant IBM is laying off about 5,000 of its workers and reportedly outsourcing those jobs to India.
IBM has about 400,000 employees worldwide and the cuts represent about 4 percent of the company's U.S.-based work force. While workers are being notified Thursday, many won't officially be laid off for 30 to 90 days, depending on where they work.
Many local residents who heard about the layoffs were disappointed with IBM's decision.
"I don't think it makes any sense," says Danny Moran, of New City. "I think there are enough Americans losing their jobs here, and if we're going to source them out to other places, it's not going to help our situation."
IBM's U.S.-based work force stood at about 115,000 at the end of last year. In January, the company cut thousands of jobs in sales, software and hardware divisions.
