Illegal Suffern yeshiva facing closure
The Ramapo Town Board approved an injunction to shut down an illegal Suffern yeshiva if it doesn't come into compliance with health and safety codes by next Wednesday.
Yeshiva Ohel Yachanan remained opened Friday, despite receiving six violations for operating a school without a permit inside a wood frame, single-family home that is zoned as residential.
Officials say the building at 97 Highview Road is unsafe because it has no emergency doors and the school's fire alarm is not connected to the county's fire control center.
Operators of the yeshiva face up to $5,000 a day in fines for each violation and possibly jail time.
