Police say a driver who made an illegal U-turn on the NYS Thruway Thursday collided with another car, killing that driver.

According to state troopers, a woman traveling northbound made a U-turn between exits 16 and 17 outside of Woodbury, and crashed into an SUV going southbound. The driver of the SUV was airlifted to a hospital and later died. Authorities say two other women were also taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The accident caused the thruway to be shut down on the southbound side for about an hour. Troopers caution drivers that making a U-turn on the thruway is extremely dangerous.
