The controversy over Spring Valley Mayor George Darden?s alleged hiring of illegal immigrants is spilling over into the current Rockland County Board race.

Darden admitted last week to hiring the workers, but the mayor claims he was not aware of their immigration status.

Alden Wolfe, a Democratic challenger running for the County Board, wants current legislator and Village Attorney Bruce Levine to come forward with information he has about the hiring. Wolfe is challenging incumbent Levine for his Democratic seat.

?I certainly think that hiring illegal immigrants is wrong,? said Wolfe. ?Hiring them to work for a municipality is even worse. This is about government. It's not about politics. And it's about accountability from our elected officials.?

Levine said he stands by Darden?s claims of ignorance concerning the illegal immigrants. The village attorney believes Wolfe is trying to help posture himself for the September Democratic primary.
