Indian Point 2 remains offline after fire, explosion
Indian Point 2 remains offline today after a transformer explosion sparked a fire at the nuclear facility over the weekend, forcing an emergency shutdown at the Westchester power plant.
Entergy spokesman Jerry Nappi said that the explosion happened just after 6:30 Sunday night in a major transformer about 150 yards from the plant itself.
"It's not something obviously that we anticipate, but you are prepared to handle it in case it does happen," Nappi said.
Nappi added that when something like this occurs with a major piece of equipment, the plant is designed to automatically shut down.
There were no reported injuries in the incident, and Nappi said that the public was never in danger. An investigation is ongoing into the cause of the explosion. It is not known when Indian Point 2 will be back up and running.
