Indian Point emergency siren system fails for second time in a week
For the second time in a week, Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant?s emergency siren system failed.
Officials say problems with Verizon phone lines are to blame for the system failure. The four surrounding counties are supposed to be able to set off and monitor the sirens by remote control. However, the counties cannot do that with the current loss of the phone link.
Entergy, which owns Indian Point, says it would take up to two years to upgrade the system with something that would be less vulnerable to breakdowns. Westchester County Executive Andy Spano says two years is too long to wait.
