The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is allowing Entergy to move ahead with license renewals for two Indian Point units.
The applications contain enough information to be considered, NRC representatives said. Unit Two?s license is currently slated to expire in 2013. Unit Three?s expiration year is 2015. NRC officials said the review process could take as long as three years.
If renewed, the units of the Buchanan nuclear plant will run for an additional 20 years.
"We are pleased we can now begin making the case for continuing operations for another 20 years,? said Entergy spokesman Jim Steets.
Westchester County officials are opposed to the license renewal. They believe the renewal should be treated as an application for a new plant due to the high population of the area.
Opponents have 60 days to submit objections. NRC officials said those objections will be taken into consideration during the review process.
