Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant owner Entergy has agreed to pay a $650,000 fine for failing to have its new emergency siren system up and running by August of 2007.

Entergy worked to replace the old siren system that was subject to repeated failures during testing. The first deadline was missed in January of 2007. The second missed deadline in April resulted in a fine of $130,000. Entergy says the new system will be ready by August 2008.

Entergy officials say they will continue to work with federal officials to get the new system up and running. Until then, the old siren system will continue to be the way of notifying the public of a serious problem at the plant.
