Jury sends HV man to jail for 13 years in torture case
A man was sentenced to 13 years behind bars Tuesday for the torture and attempted rape of an ex-girlfriend.
Rafael Rodriguez, 24, was found guilty of attempted rape, sexual abuse and unlawful imprisonment in July. His ex-girlfriend says Rodriquez tortured her for hours at her Spring Valley apartment in January before she could lock herself in a bathroom and call for help.
Rodriguez could face a longer sentence than the one handed out Tuesday. He will return to court in October to faces attempted escape charges.
Police say Rodriguez attempted to escape from jail in February by using the cover of an electrical outlet to chisel away the wall and window frame of his cell.
