Kent officials continue to monitor ice jams on Housatonic
Roads were closed, homes were evacuated and schools remained shut down Tuesday as officials continue to monitor ice jams on the Housatonic River that caused flooding issues and led to a state of emergency in Kent.
Kent's newly formed Incident Command Team is keeping a close eye on the river's water level over flooding concerns from when the two ice jams, one of which is a mile long, break apart and melt.
The town's first selectman tells News 12 that the water below the ice is moving and the levels have dropped. He says the town is in wait-and-see mode.
Kent declared a state of emergency that allowed the town to get resources from the state, including sand bags and rescue boats in the event those are needed.
Route 7 in Kent will be closed indefinitely. The town's boarding school will remain shut down through Sunday.
Officials say there are currently no plans to manually break up the ice.
