A Port Jervis kindergarten student collapsed and died Tuesday while participating in field day activities at her school.The mood at the Anna Kuhl Elementary School went from celebratory to somber after the 5-year-old suddenly fell to the ground in front of classmates around 11:30 a.m. While waiting for the ambulance to arrive, the girl was treated by school staff and an off-duty EMT. She died shortly after arriving at Bon Secours Hospital.

The girl?s mother was at the school when she collapsed. The school district is not releasing the kindergartener?s name until all of her family members are reached.

Letters from the school explaining the incident were sent home with students. Counselors will be available at the school to help staff members and students.

State police are investigating to see if the girl had a medical problem that contributed to her death.
