Laurel Plains E. S. closed again due to chemicals
The Laurel Plains Elementary School in New City is closed again this week after investigators discovered that dangerous chemicals in the school's front lawn may be to blame for foul odors in the area, and not rodent nests as previously suspected.
Experts discovered chemicals such as propane and butane in the front yard of the school and say that they may be related to a gas leak that happened in the area a few weeks ago.
Parents, however, are fed up with the supposed lack of progress in clearing the school of the odors. Some parents say that until the problem is definitively solved, they won?t send their children back.
Administrators say that students will continue to attend Clarkstown South High School for their classes, but options for long-term plans won?t be finalized until the weekend. One option includes reopening the now closed Hillcrest Elementary School and moving the students there until the problem can be fully resolved.
