A day care center in Stony Point was forced to shutter its doors last Friday due to lead concerns, leaving parents scrambling for a new care provider.

The Stony Point Child Care Center was closed after health officials discovered that one of the children had elevated levels of lead. Although it is not clear if the child got it at the center, they say there is a lead problem in the building where the center has been housed for the past 20 years. However, none of the other 83 children or 23 staff members has elevated lead levels.

The closing of the day care center left many local parents in a difficult situation.

"As a working parent in this economy," says Nicole Bosco, of Pomona. "To have to get to work late and leave work early to provide services for my son...I'm at jeopardy of losing my job."

The building where the day care center is located is owned by the town of Stony Point. It is stated in the center's lease that its administration is responsible for the inside of the building, which places the responsibility for lead abatement on the center.

The directors of the Stony Point Child Care Center are looking into the lead abatement process, but they say it takes time, and their main concern now is finding another place for the children.

"We're all devastated and very upset, and it's just a terrible situation for the entire community," says Laura Milsom, the executive director of the center.
