Lightning misses homeowner, sets roof ablaze
A Chestnut Ridge man is living with neighbors Thursday after a lightning bolt tore through his roof, igniting a fire.
The bolt struck the Eldorado Drive home Wednesday night and hit a bedroom closet, narrowly missing the homeowner.
The bolt caused a fire, which heavily damaged the bedroom, charred windows and left debris strewn about. Water damage is also present on the lower floors.
"It was so loud. It sounded like an explosion," neighbor Linda Cernak says of the lighting bolt. "The roof of the house was in flames about 25 feet tall."
The homeowner is temporarily staying with neighbors.
