Local first responders and family of the victims of the 1981 Brinks robbery came together in solidarity for the 39th anniversary Tuesday.
A tribute around the Nyack Mountainview Avenue memorial took place to honor the three men who lost their lives that day.
Sgt. Edward O’Grady was killed by robbers as they stole $1.6 million from the armored car outside of the Nanuet National Bank.
Officer Waverly Brown and Brinks guard Peter Paige were killed about an hour later at a Thruway roadblock.
"We've all experienced loss in our lives, but the sudden tragic murder of two people that you work with was a monumental event,” says retired South Nyack Grand View Chief Brent Newbury. “The men who wore the same uniforms, drove the same cars, that you worked at a street fair with a week before."
Several people were charged in the robbery, including Mutulu Shakur, the mastermind and stepdad to Tupac Shakur; Kathy Boudin, who served 22 years behind bars; David Gilbert, who remains in prison; and Judith Clark. Clark’s 75-year-to-life sentence was commuted by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2016. She was granted parole in 2019.
