The driver survived after he smashed into a tree and was trapped inside the burning vehicle.

YONKERS - A man is lucky to be alive after smashing his car into a tree and being trapped inside his burning vehicle.

Police say the accident happened just before 3 a.m. today right off the Bronx River Parkway at Scarsdale Road. They say the car hit a tree and then caught on fire, trapping the driver inside for a brief time.

Investigators say the man was taken to the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla in serious condition.

There is no word yet on what caused the crash or whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
