The Spring Valley community is mourning after the death of one of their longtime school staff members who died in a fire this weekend.
Venel Edouard, who served as Spring Valley High School's J.V. soccer coach and as a security guard, was killed and two others were hurt in a fire Saturday morning at home at 81 Rockland Lane in the Hillcrest section of Ramapo.
Edouard was a beloved member of the school district and hundreds of people gathered on the Spring Valley High School football field Sunday to remember him. "You think about the strength of the community and the people who serve and the people who volunteer and coach Venel was that kind of person," says East Ramapo Central School Superintendent Dr. Deborah Wortham.
Grief counselors will be on hand at the school today.
The Rockland County Sheriff's fire investigation and crime scene units are looking into what sparked the fatal fire.
