A man who lost his family in a car accident years ago is giving back to his community through an important foundation.
Dexter Gardiner lost six loved ones in a car crash on the Bronx River Parkway in 2006, including his twin brother, niece and two nephews.
On Sunday, the Gardiner Foundation hosted its 13th annual Memorial Basketball Classic at St. James Park.
"It's just been real hard," says Gardiner.  "I try to just give back because giving back and helping people -- that's what gives me the motivation to keep waking up every day."
The foundation was only able to offer a single $500 scholarship when it first started -- now, it gives away 10 $1,000 scholarships.
Gardiner also handed out iPads and tablets to the winners of the tournament and 600 backpacks to neighborhood children.
