Man who saved 4 friends with 911 call from boat dies
One person was killed and four others injured after a boat capsized on the Hudson River Monday night.
The Putnam County Sheriff's Department says the 26-foot boat overturned at approximately 11:15 p.m. near Garrison, throwing all five people into the river after possibly hitting some rocks.
Authorities say Steven Vasta, 25, managed to call police from underneath the boat. Rescuers eventually found the group, despite Vasta's cell phone going in and out. While the others were saved, Vasta died.
Vasta recently graduated from Iona College with a degree in finance and worked for a lawyer in White Plains. Three of the survivors were in critical condition.
Police say the four men and one woman, all from Mahopac, boarded the boat at a dock in the Newburgh area. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the accident.Click here for team coverage on reaction to the accident.
