The group March for Life New York held a benefit dinner in Bay Shore Saturday to raise money for a rally in Albany next month.
The organization’s president, Joni Lupis, says the group wants to overturn New York’s Reproductive Health Act. The law allows for an abortion after 24 weeks if a woman's health or life is in jeopardy or the fetus is not viable.
Lupis says her organization wants to end what they say is the “horrific practice of abortion.”
"We care about the babies, but we also help the women and the men who had abortions, because we find out that the people that have abortions regret it," she says.
JoAnn Smith, the president of Planned Parenthood of Nassau County, says New York's Reproductive Health Act ensures that women have access to safe and legal abortions:
"We fought for 12 years to get the RHA passed and thank God we did, because now New York is that beacon of…reproductive rights that we've always been for the women who live here and a safe haven for those who do not."
The fourth annual “March For Life New York” rally is June 3 at the state Capitol Building.
