Maureen Porette announces run for Rockland County exec
Maureen Porette announced her bid Wednesday to become the next Rockland County executive.
Porette, of Stony Point, would become the county's first female executive and the first Democrat to hold the position in more than two decades if she wins.
She must first topple incumbent Ed Day, who in February announced his plans to seek re-election. On Wednesday, Day held his second campaign fundraiser, where he said he is running on his own record.
Porette, a mother of eight, worked as an attorney for 23 years and says she was motivated to enter the race after President Donald Trump instituted his controversial travel ban. She says she has spent hours working pro-bono with refugees, inspiring her to take the next step.
Election Day falls on Nov. 7 this year.
