Breast cancer in men is in the spotlight as Beyonce's father announced his diagnosis.
Beyonce's father, Matthew Knowles, revealed during an interview Wednesday morning that he had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The 67-year-old said he had surgery back in July and is recovering.
Doctors say male breast cancer is rare and makes up only about 1 percent of all new cases.
Dr. Michael Dobryansky, of the Long Island Plastic Surgical Group, says that's why men don't think they can be at risk for the disease. He says men are not as attuned as women are about getting checked.
Jeff Flynn, 66, a grandfather from East Meadow, is part of the very small statistical group. Flynn says getting the news is life-changing.
"It's the worst phone call of your life," says Flynn.
Flynn had surgery, chemo and radiation in 2012. He eventually went back to work and moved on with his life. Then three years later the cancer came back.
Doctors are urging men to check themselves and to get checked by doctors.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 240,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women each year, but only about 2,200 in men.
