Metro-North to put safety over on-time performance

The new on-time performance goal will be 93 percent. (3/24/14)

WHITE PLAINS - The new president of the Metro-North has announced that he's putting safety over on-time performance for the railroad.

A federal probe recently found that Metro-North was sacrificing safety because of efforts to keep a 97 percent on-time performance.

"I needed to take the focus off increasing the on-time performance to make sure that everyone knows our first priority is safety," said Joseph Giuletti in a statement to News 12. "The on-time performance will follow when we run a safe railroad and after we do our May schedule change."

The new on-time performance goal will be 93 percent. Many trains this year are not meeting that goal, according to monthly reports.

The rail president says that around May 11, the on-time performance will improve after they finish up track work in the Bronx.
