The Moleston Fire District is fighting to remove New Square from its jurisdiction.
The fire district serves the Hasidic village of New Square. Officials say due to the large amount of fire and safety code violations that have been going on in the village for years, the safety of firefighters is at risk. Rockland Fire Coordinator Gordon Wren says the village hasn't been aggressive in enforcing fire codes. Wren adds New Square didn't even adopt state codes until about a year ago.
Wren doesn't support the push to remove New Square from the fire district. However, he says if it spotlights the problems with building codes, it will be a good thing. County Executive Scott Vanderhoff has plans to reach out to Governor Eliot Spitzer (D-NY) to work with the state in setting up fire safety goals.
