A major Hudson Valley prison is set to close - and some local leaders crying foul.

The state announced that six prisons will close next spring, including the Downstate Correctional Facility in Fishkill.

The state says its current incarcerated population is the lowest it has been in decades, so closing the prisons will save about $142 million taxpayer dollars.

Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro says the governor's office gave him no advanced notice this was happening.

He says he has not heard a concrete plan to repurpose the soon-to-be-empty facility.

"You know these are families that are going to have their lives uprooted. Both employer/employees and those who are incarcerated, their families," says Molinaro.

The state says all inmates will be transferred to other state prisons or county jails.

All staff will be offered jobs for transfer.

The state says there will be no layoffs.
