Montgomery's town supervisor is responding to criticism after the town's police department was found to be operating without a chief and overpaying a part-time officer.
Supervisor Brian Maher says he's been working with the Civil Service Commission since last year to appoint an interim police chief.
Maher says the Town Board will immediately correct the salary increase of the part-time officer who was acting in an unofficial role as chief.
Montgomery reappointed John VanTassel as interim chief last week after the appointment expired.
Maher says three Montgomery sergeants recently took the police exam, and that the town is awaiting the results to hire a permanent chief.
