YONKERS - Firefighters battled a four-alarm fire and ice at a multi-family home in south Yonkers yesterday that left six families out in the cold.

The fire sparked at 164 Beech St. at around 9:30 p.m.

Yonkers Fire Commissioner Robert Sweeney says firefighters saved eight people trapped inside the home.

However, the extreme cold conditions, including subzero temperatures, made fighting the fire even more difficult.

No one was seriously injured in the fire, but 14 firefighters were hurt while responding in the cold.
