Neighbors are revealing new details as a police investigation continues into a standoff and explosion at a home in North Haven Wednesday night.

News 12 is told nine officers went to the hospital and the man at the center of the ordeal is believed to have been killed.

Wrecking crews came Friday to level what was left of the home on the 300 block of Quinnipiac Avenue and tow some of the burned out cars from the backyard.

Police still have not identified the person killed, but court records show this home is owned by John and Deborah Sayre. The documents also show that Deborah filed for divorce two weeks ago.

Neighbors tell News 12 that John was the person police were calling to come out of the home during the standoff.

It all began Wednesday afternoon when police say a woman reported a violent domestic incident with her husband. North Haven's first selectman says she'd been held hostage and escaped.

Police say they rushed to the scene, where things escalated when the man barricaded himself in. Then around 8:15 p.m. a series of explosions from the property rocked the neighborhood.

Neighbors tell News 12 that John Sayre was a plumber. They also say they stayed away from him, pointing out “no trespassing” signs and cameras all over the property.

One neighbor says he filed a blight complaint with the city against John Sayre because at one point, his yard was filled with vehicles, sinks and toilets.

"He'd be on his lawn mower at 11:30 at night," said one neighbor, Erik Gustaf. "I do know for some reason he started shining spotlights on the neighbors' house, so late at night the side of their house would be lit up as if it was daylight."

The investigation is ongoing.
