New Rochelle announced a new initiative that aims to help the city's growing Hispanic community. 

The Hispanic-America Advisory Committee was sponsored by District 1 Councilwoman Martha Lopez. She wants an official, government-sponsored body to address the many challenges Hispanic people face in the area. They make up about a third of the population.

The new city program will be unveiled today at the "Taste of Union Avenue" event.

Some of the problems that will be addressed include housing issues and exploitation. Business owners and employees say it’s a great idea.

"Honestly, it's going to be really nice,” says Jessica Munguia. “All of this is people who know each other. They're from the same town in Mexico, or wherever they're from. They've known each other forever. It's great that they're doing it. It's great that they're focusing on it."

Gov. Kathy Hochul is on the schedule to talk about the new attention put toward protecting immigrants in New Rochelle and other cities.
