Family and friends are mourning a fourth-grader from New City who unexpectedly died from a brain hemorrhage Monday.

The principal at Laurel Plains Elementary School that Caitlin Powers attended went from class to class Tuesday, sharing the news with the students. Grief counselors have been made available at the school.

A wake will be held for Powers Friday at the Higgin Funeral Home, followed by a funeral Saturday at Saint Francis Church.

Powers' basketball team started collecting money to help her family with funeral costs.
