MONSEY - A $1.7 million development plan has been reached between Rockland and Ramapo to build a new state-of-the-art park-and-ride lot.

The former Rockland drive-in movie theatre on Route 59 in Monsey has served as a park-and-ride lot for commuters headed to New York City for 15 years. After years of use, the lot is starting to show its age. The new lot will be just down the road along Saddle Road and Route 59.

The new lot will feature 380 free parking spaces. Officials say they hope it will increase ridership for the commuter buses and reduce highway congestion.

Crews won't break ground on the park-and-ride lot until after environmental impact studies are complete. Once they are, construction on the project could take about a year to complete.
