New Rochelle parents and students are trying to figure out what they will be doing for the next two weeks following the closure of area schools over coronavirus.

Parents say they have to figure out what to do about child care. Students who have to study from home say they worry about their AP exams and falling behind in general.

The district has released its plan for coursework. One of the big challenges this district faces is that not every student has access to the internet and laptops.

News 12 has learned that students at the high school and Albert Leonard Middle School are being sent home with Chromebooks so they can complete course work.

The superintendent said in a letter to parents that they must make the two weeks off count and ensure that students are still learning and engaged during this containment period.

The decision to close schools comes one day after school Superintendent Dr. Feijoo said she would not close school without written directions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

She has said all along that keeping kids in school is a priority and the safest place for them.

Right now, there are no confirmed cases of the coronavirus in any school, but staff members at Columbus Elementary and Albert Leonard Middle School are on self-quarantine at this time.

Earlier Tuesday during a news conference, the governor said instituting a containment area is a matter of life or death.

"New Rochelle is a particular problem, it is what they call a cluster. The numbers have been going up, the numbers continue to go up, the numbers are going up unabated. And we do need a special public health strategy for New Rochelle," he said.
