New Tappan Zee may be partially privatized
Gov. David Paterson has began searching for businesses willing to invest in the multimillion-dollar replacement of the Tappan Zee Bridge.
"We know that this is the only way this can be done under the circumstances we are facing today," says Al Samuels, of I-278 Tappan Zee Task Force.
While officials say it is necessary to build a new bridge, the state cannot fund the project on its own, considering its $50 billion budget gap.
Although some people fear that involving private investors in the project will lead to higher tolls, Samuels says a toll hike is likely regardless of who fronts the money.
