PIERMONT - There are calls for new safety measures after another barge for the new Tappan Zee Bridge suddenly came loose on Sunday.
The New York State Thruway Authority announced on Monday that it will impose a $1 million per month fine against Tappan Zee Contractors until it presents a plan to prevent construction barges from becoming unmoored.
On Sunday, a spokesperson told News 12 that the barge moorings are checked multiple times each shift. One such check occurred just 45 minutes before a barge came loose in the high winds and waters.

A Thruway Authority spokesperson says a GPS tracking system at the construction site should be installed by the end of the month.
The system will alert if a boat or barge on the project travels beyond a certain zone.
